Heat Pump Maintenance in Sarasota Keeps Both Modes Working
A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. In summer it moves heat out of your house. On a cold morning it pulls heat from the outdoor air and moves it in. Because it does both jobs, it runs more hours than a cooling only system, and it has a few extra parts that can fail.
Our AC maintenance visits check both modes. In the spring we focus on cooling. In the fall we switch the system to heat, test the reversing valve and defrost controls, and make sure the backup heat strips only come on when they should.

Common Heat Pump Problems
Stuck in heat or cool
The reversing valve or its solenoid has failed, so the system blows warm air when you want cool or the other way round.
Blowing cold air in heat mode
A short burst during defrost is normal. Constant cold air points to a defrost control, sensor or refrigerant problem.
Huge winter power bill
Usually the backup heat strips running when they shouldn’t, because of a thermostat set up wrong or a heat pump that isn’t keeping up.
Outdoor unit iced over
A light frost on a cold morning clears itself. A solid block of ice means the defrost cycle isn’t working.
Not cooling in summer
The same faults as any AC: capacitors, contactors, refrigerant leaks and blocked drains. See our AC repair service.
Short cycling
Starting and stopping every few minutes. Often an oversized system, a refrigerant issue or a thermostat in a bad spot.
If the system stops completely on a hot night, use our emergency AC repair line.

Heat Pump Replacement in Sarasota
When a heat pump reaches 12 to 15 years old, or needs a compressor or a new coil, replacement often makes more sense than repair. A new heat pump is also the most common upgrade for homes that currently have straight AC with electric heat strips. It cools the same way, and on cold mornings it heats for a fraction of what heat strips cost to run.
What to look at when choosing one:
- SEER2 for cooling efficiency. This is the number that matters most in Sarasota.
- HSPF2 for heating efficiency. Less important here, but a decent rating still helps on cold mornings.
- Variable speed. Better humidity control and quieter running, worth considering if your house always feels muggy.
- Correct size. We run a load calculation on every replacement. An oversized heat pump in Florida leaves the house damp.
Our AC installation in Sarasota page explains how we size, quote and install, and the same process applies to heat pumps. For rooms with no ductwork, a ductless mini split is a heat pump too, just without the ducts.
Heat Pump or Furnace for a Sarasota Home?
For almost every home here, a heat pump. Sarasota gets a handful of nights a year in the 40s, and modern heat pumps handle that easily. A gas furnace only makes sense if you already have natural gas and want the backup heat. If you do have one, we look after those too on our heating and furnace repair page.
Humidity is a bigger issue than heat in our climate. If the house feels clammy in summer even with the heat pump running, our indoor air quality team can add a dehumidifier or a thermostat that controls humidity.
We repair and install heat pumps across Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton and Palmetto. See all our heating and cooling services.

Heat Pump Questions
Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heat mode?
If it lasts a few minutes on a cold morning, the system is probably in defrost, which is normal. If the air stays cold, the reversing valve, defrost control or refrigerant charge may be the problem. Check the thermostat is set to heat, then call us if it continues.
What does emergency heat mean on my thermostat?
Emergency heat runs only the electric heat strips and switches the heat pump off. It’s meant for when the heat pump has failed. It works, but it costs much more to run, so only use it until we can fix the heat pump.
Why is my heat pump not cooling?
The same causes as any AC: a dirty filter, a failed capacitor, a blocked drain that tripped the float switch, or low refrigerant. A reversing valve stuck in heat mode is the one fault specific to heat pumps.
How long do heat pumps last in Florida?
Around 10 to 15 years. They run more hours than a cooling only system because they work all year, and coastal units can wear faster from salt air.
Is it normal for my heat pump to steam in winter?
Yes. During defrost, the outdoor coil warms up to melt frost, and that can look like steam or smoke. It should stop after a few minutes.
