How Much Is a New AC Unit in Sarasota? 2026 Prices

Real 2026 numbers for a new AC unit cost in Sarasota and the Tampa Bay area, by size and efficiency, with a worked example for a 1,500 sq ft home and the Florida extras most price guides leave out.

Quick answer

Published 2026 prices for the Tampa Bay area put a typical central AC or heat pump replacement at about $7,500 to $11,000 installed. A 3-ton system at the 14.3 SEER2 Florida minimum, the size many 1,500 sq ft homes need, runs about $7,459 to $8,822. Premium inverter systems can pass $15,000. The only way to know your number is a written quote based on a load calculation.

Key takeaways

  • Most 1,500 sq ft Sarasota homes need a 2.5 to 3 ton system, but a load calculation decides it, not square footage alone.
  • Moving from the code minimum to a two stage mid tier system adds about $2,000 to a 3-ton install. Top tier inverter systems cost roughly twice the minimum (2026 Tampa Bay pricing).
  • FPL gives a $200 instant rebate on qualifying systems of 15.2 SEER2 or higher. The federal 25C heat pump tax credit ended on December 31, 2025.
  • Florida installs need a permit, hurricane tie-downs and an A2L refrigerant system (R-454B or R-32). A fair quote includes all three.
  • Use the age times repair cost rule: over 5,000 usually means replace.

How Much Is a New AC Unit for a 1,500 Sq Ft House?

Across the whole state, a 2026 Florida guide puts most replacements between $6,000 and $12,000 installed, with the full range running from about $4,500 to $15,500. Sarasota sits in the South Florida climate, so expect the middle to upper part of that range for a full system.

New AC Unit Cost by Efficiency Level

SEER2 measures how much cooling you get per unit of electricity. Since 2023, new split systems sold in the Southeast must be at least 14.3 SEER2 for most home sizes. Going higher costs more upfront and less every month after.

LevelWhat you getBest for
14.3 SEER2, single stageRuns at full speed or off. Lowest price.Rentals, homes you plan to sell soon, tight budgets
15 to 17 SEER2, two stageA low setting for mild days, so it runs longer and removes more humidity. Most Sarasota family homes
18+ SEER2, variable speed inverterAdjusts speed continuously. Quietest, most even temperatures, best humidity control.Homes that always feel sticky, long term owners, high summer bills

In our climate the middle tier is often the sweet spot. A Sarasota system runs most of the year, so the savings from a higher rating add up faster than they would up north, and two stage operation helps with the clammy feeling so many Florida homes have. If humidity is your main complaint, read about indoor air quality and humidity control in Sarasota before you decide.

What Size AC Unit Do You Need?

A common Florida rule of thumb is roughly one ton of cooling for every 500 to 600 square feet. Use it to sanity check a quote, never to pick a system.

Rule of thumb sizing for Florida homes

Approximate only. Windows, insulation, sun exposure and duct location can move the answer by half a ton or more.

  • 2 ton 1,000 to 1,200 sq ft
  • 2.5 ton 1,200 to 1,500 sq ft
  • 3 ton 1,500 to 1,800 sq ft
  • 3.5 ton 1,800 to 2,100 sq ft
  • 4 ton 2,100 to 2,500 sq ft

Highlighted: the usual range for a 1,500 sq ft home.

Oversizing is the more common mistake in Florida. A system that is too big cools the air fast and shuts off before it pulls the moisture out, so the house reads 74 degrees but feels damp. That is why we run a Manual J load calculation on every replacement. If your quote doesn’t mention one, ask how they sized the system.

Heat pump outdoor units
Most Sarasota homes are better off with a heat pump, which cools and heats with one outdoor unit.

What Pushes the Price Up or Down

Two homes the same size can get quotes thousands of dollars apart. These are the reasons.

System size

Each half ton adds equipment cost.

Efficiency

Higher SEER2 and variable speed cost more upfront.

Air handler location

Attic installs take more labor than a closet or garage.

Ductwork

Leaky or undersized ducts may need repair or replacement.

Electrical

Old disconnects or panels sometimes need upgrading.

Coastal location

Coated coils for salt air add cost and years of life.

Our AC installation page explains each of these in more detail, including what a good install should include.

Florida Costs Most Price Guides Leave Out

National averages often skip the parts of a Florida install that are required here. Make sure your quote includes them.

Also check whether the quote replaces both halves. New refrigerants mean an old air handler is often not compatible with a new outdoor unit, and a mismatched system runs below its rated efficiency.

A Florida install should include hurricane tie-downs and a permit.

Rebates and Tax Credits in 2026

FPL rebate: $200. Florida Power & Light gives a $200 instant rebate when an FPL Participating Independent Contractor installs a qualifying heat pump or central AC rated 15.2 SEER2 or higher. It comes off the invoice. Rebates change, so ask at the time of your quote.

The federal 25C tax credit has ended. The credit of up to $2,000 for heat pumps applied only to systems placed in service by December 31, 2025. There is no federal heat pump tax credit for 2026 installs, and Florida has no state credit to replace it. Be wary of any quote that still promises one.

Repair or Replace? Run the Numbers

A simple rule many technicians use: multiply the system’s age by the repair price. If the answer is over 5,000, replacing usually makes more sense. Try it with your own numbers.

Repair or replace calculator

Multiply the system age in years by the repair quote in dollars. If the result is more than 5,000, replacing the system usually makes more sense than repairing it. Example: a 12 year old system with a $600 repair quote gives 7,200, so replacement is worth a quote.

A rule of thumb, not a verdict. Systems still on R-22 refrigerant (most installed before about 2010) lean toward replacement because R-22 hasn’t been produced since 2020.

Still not sure? Book an AC repair visit in Sarasota and the technician will price both options. If the system is still young, regular AC maintenance is the cheapest way to get more years out of it.

How to Get an Accurate Quote

01

Ask for a load calculation

Sizing from square footage or the old unit’s label is guessing.

02

Get it itemized and in writing

Equipment, labor, permit, tie-downs, drain and removal should all be listed.

03

Check the system is matched

The outdoor unit and air handler should be a rated pair.

04

Check the insurance

Ask for proof of liability insurance before you sign.

If your rooms have never cooled evenly, ask for the ducts to be checked too. Our duct sealing and cleaning service often fixes problems a new AC alone won’t. For garages and additions, a ductless mini split can cost far less than extending ductwork, and a heat pump is the most common choice for whole home replacements here.

How Long Will a New AC Last in Sarasota?

Expect about 10 to 15 years. Systems here run far more hours a year than in cooler states, and units near the water on Siesta Key, Lido or Longboat Key often come in at the low end because of salt air. Two tune-ups a year and a fresh water rinse of the outdoor coil push most systems toward the top of the range.

We install across Sarasota, from the neighborhoods we serve to Bradenton. If your current AC is running but not keeping up, read our guide on why an AC stops cooling first. It might be a cheap fix.

New AC Unit Cost Questions

A 2026 statewide guide puts most Florida replacements between $6,000 and $12,000 installed, with a full range of about $4,500 to $15,500. Size, efficiency, ductwork and how hard the air handler is to reach make the difference.

Usually $7,500 to $11,000 in the Tampa Bay area for a 2.5 or 3 ton central system at the minimum or middle efficiency level, based on 2026 published prices. Top tier inverter systems cost more.

A full replacement should. Ask the contractor to confirm. Replacing only the outdoor unit is often not possible with new refrigerants, and a mismatched pair loses efficiency and can affect your warranty.

Often, yes. Sarasota systems run most of the year, so efficiency savings build up faster than in cooler states. A two stage or variable speed system also controls humidity better, which many Florida homeowners notice more than the bill.

No. The federal 25C credit ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. FPL customers can still get a $200 instant rebate on qualifying systems of 15.2 SEER2 or higher.

Most full replacements take one day. Jobs that need new ductwork, a different air handler location or electrical upgrades can take two.

Yes. HVAC changeouts in Sarasota County and the City of Sarasota need a mechanical permit and an inspection. A professional contractor should handle both. Ask us for a free quote and we’ll include it.
